Case Study: Asda

Children participating in the Big Healthy Eat launch

After extensive consultation with colleagues, local schools and customers, ASDA developed its Big Healthy Eat programme. The programme was launched in 2001 with every store taking part and in total over 550,000 primary school children were educated on the benefits of healthy eating between then and 2005. The programme varied between communities to adapt it to suit the individual school and included, for example, sampling fruits and vegetables and visiting the local store to follow the chill chain from distribution.

2006 saw the Big Healthy Eat launch a healthy breakfast theme – the Healthy Breakfast Challenge. Breakfast clubs were set up in each of the participating schools and ASDA provided the first months' products for free to get them started, as well as a comprehensive 'Healthy Breakfast Challenge Pack'. The pack provides schools with a range of hints, tips and advice on running the Healthy Breakfast, for example giving ideas for healthy breakfasts, providing a breakfast quiz and suggesting role play activities.

Over 500 schools took part in the Challenge, with children trying products and being taught about the benefits of eating a healthy breakfast.
