Meats
The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) confirms that
rising beef prices in recent years reflect a steady increase in UK beef
consumption
(particularly for processed meat products) reaching 1 million tonnes in
2005.
Sheep prices grew strongly in 2001-3 following the mass FMD-related cull
of
sheep
in
2001, but have since declined as production has recovered and
demand
has
slowed.
Increased imports of New Zealand lamb and a fresh
outbreak
of
foot
and
mouth
disease in 2007 has put further downward
pressure
on
sheepmeat
prices.
