Defra confirms that rising beef prices in recent years reflect a steady increase
in UK beef consumption (particularly for processed meat products and minced
beef) reaching 1 million tonnes in 2005.
Sheep prices have increased rapidly since
2007 as a result of tight supplies in European markets caused by declining
production in the UK, Spain, France and Ireland, as well as a significant fall
in
volumes of imports as a result of droughts and a 24% reduction in the size of
the
New Zealand flock.
