Case Study: Cadbury Schweppes

Fit For Life Programme

Cadbury Schweppes Fit For Life Programme

Cadbury has a long tradition of concern for employee welfare with founder George Cadbury believing a healthy worker to be a productive worker. Today, improving the health and wellbeing of its employees is one of Cadbury Schweppes' sustainability goals and commitments for 2006 - 2010, having recognised that a happy and healthy workforce remains crucial to the long term sustainability of the company.

Fulfilling this goal was a key driver behind Fit for Life, which was launched by Cadbury Trebor Bassett, Cadbury Schweppes' UK business, in January 2006. Fit for Life is a lifestyle and activity programme available to all Cadbury Schweppes employees throughout the UK.

A core component is the opportunity for all staff to have a free, confidential health check up, available on site and around the clock. Underpinning this is a themed calendar of events including a range of activities for employees. Activities are grouped under four pillars - Nutrition, Personal Wellbeing, Activity, Balance and Relaxation and 40 employees have been recruited as 'Fit for Life Champions' to help deliver the programme.

Since the launch, more than 4,000 employees - half the workforce - have engaged with Fit for Life, with infectious levels of enthusiasm. More than 2,500 have had health checks, and 1,500 have been involved in classes, workshops and therapies ranging from reflexology, smoking cessation, Pilates and salsa.

Results demonstrate significant improvements at all sites, with 82% of employees feeling 'more aware about their health' and 45% taking up exercise. In addition, 70% felt more positive about working for Cadbury Schweppes.

Following the success of Fit for Life in the UK, the programme has now been transferred to Cadbury Schweppes sites across the world including Canada and France, using the UK blueprint. The programme has also been recognised in a number of industry awards including a shortlisting for an HR Excellence Award and the Business in the Community Excellence Awards.
