A snapshot of programmes in Scotland
A number of SFDF's member companies have been engaged in
workplace wellbeing schemes over the past year. These have
been extremely significant initiatives and show that the food and
drink manufacturing industry in Scotland takes employee health
seriously.
Some of Scotland's best known companies have established a
broad range of activities, each of which have had an important
part to play in making a positive contribution towards improving
health and wellbeing.
Baxters Food Group has a resident Occupational Health Advisor
and will shortly begin a programme of health promotion activity,
looking at areas such as health screening, promoting a healthy
diet, weight loss and blood pressure, as well as awareness
raising on men's and women's health issues.
Devro (Scotland) has a subsidised canteen with healthy eating options and fruit
available. An occupational health nurse and
physician regularly visit the plant to carry out medical and absence referrals,
as well as wider health promotion activities around losing weight, sensible
drinking, smoking cessation and
cancer prevention. Physical activities are also promoted through rambling,
fishing and golf clubs. An employee assistance programme offers telephone
access
to
assistance in all matters including health, and staff also have the option to
make use of up to six free face-to-face counselling sessions.
Macphie of Glenbervie has an award-winning staff restaurant, which offers a wide range of healthy
eating options. Physical activities are also promoted, with discounted
memberships
available for gyms and fitness centres (see the Macphie case study for more information.)
Nairns Oatcakes has a dedicated Healthy Working Lives Committee, which identifies key topics
which the company will address over the following 12 months. This year, the
focus
will
be on smoking cessation. Other activities include team walks and free staff
health checks.
Thomas Tunnock has a full-time occupational health nurse,
and offers smoking cessation services, alongside the provision
of fresh fruit in the staff canteen and other activities. A doctor
and chiropodist regularly visit the site and employees are
encouraged to make use of these services.
Uin Foods provides health checks for employees around
maintaining a healthy working environment, taking into
consideration important environmental factors such as
noise and dust levels. The company also undertakes health
questionnaires which are backed up by independent analysis.
