Devro: Careers case study

Michael Young, Apprentice Mechanical Engineer

DEVRO is a long-established Lanarkshire based company, a world leading manufacturer of collagen products for the food industry.

The organisation employs around 2000 people and makes edible casings for high speed food machines and for specialists making sausages and other meat products. Devro has already been working with the Scottish Food and Drink Federation on a programme aimed at promoting the food manufacturing industry to school children.

Michael Young is an Apprentice Mechanical Engineer with Devro. He says of his apprenticeship: “I'm also going to college to do an HNC in mechanical engineering, you do that for your first two years and then for your second two years you do an HND in electrical engineering so it's a multi-skilled mechanical apprenticeship. I get paid well, the working conditions are brilliant and also the guys I work with couldn't be any better, they give you a hand with practical work as well as college work.”

Devro Scotland's Managing Director Alan Kilpatrick says: “We're an exciting business that relies on technology for our growth and future development. All of this means that we need a stream of good people coming into the company.”
