Nestlé UK - Case study: Cutting CO2 emissions

Globally Nestlé invests significantly in reducing energy consumption as a business. Each year the company spends approx £20 million on educating employees and implementing technical improvements.

Nestlé in the UK has targets to reduce carbon usage by 10% against a 2006 baseline by 2010, and to phase out more than 95% of HCFCs in refrigeration by the end of 2009, six years ahead of the statutory ban.

Currently, Nestlé have reduced carbon usage by 9% against a 10% target.

In its Tutbury and Hayes coffee factories, the spent coffee grounds are used as fuel and supply more than 20% of the sites' energy needs. The combustion of this BioMass reduces the need for fossil fuels – and there is no need to use landfill.

Periodically Nestlé reviews the feasibility of burning lower carbon fuels, the use of renewable energy and combined heat and power (CHP) technology at the company's business premises.
