PepsiCo - Case study: Reducing packaging
PepsiCo has invested in new high precision machinery in order to reduce the
amount of raw materials it uses and has been able to save 5800 tones of
materials
over the last five years, amounting to almost 8,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions.
By light-weighting the cases for its snack products, PepsiCo has also been able
to save 4,500 tonnes of cardboard since 2003, which has led to a saving of
2,500
tonnes of CO2 emissions.
Furthermore, by reducing the film used in its crisp packets, the company has
been able to save over 800 tonnes of materials and has saved almost 3,000
tonnes of
CO2 emissions over the same period.
A further 500 tonnes of plastic and 2,340 tonnes of CO2 emissions were also avoided over that period by reducing the weight of
Tropicana and Copella bottles by 18%.
