Reducing packaging - case studies
- Britvic Soft Drinks has reduced the amount of glass used to
bottle its popular J2O juice drink as part of its ongoing
work to reduce packaging and energy use.
- Cadbury has given its Roses and Heroes tins a green
makeover – breaking with tradition for Christmas 2009 and
switching from metal to cardboard boxes.
- Dairy Crest has developed a number of innovations with its
retail customers to reduce packaging and packaging waste
– such as the HDPE milk bottles containing 10% recycled
plastic that it supplied to Marks & Spencer.
- Kraft Foods continued its work on the
sustainability of its Kenco coffee range, with the relaunch
of its new Kenco Eco Refill packs.
- Mars UK took part in projects with WRAP to trial methods for
lightweighting glass containers and to redesign the tins
used for its wrapped chocolates.
- Müller Dairy (UK) has been continually analysed, revised and amended with an aim to reduce its
weight and to increase its recyclability.
- Nestlé UK and Ireland (food and beverage, confectionery and food services divisions) has
a target to reduce packaging by 10% by 2010, against a 2006 baseline.
- PepsiCo has invested in new high precision machinery in order to reduce the amount of
raw materials it uses and has been able to save 5800 tones of materials over
the
last five years, amounting to almost 8,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions.
- Premier Foods was one of the first major food manufacturing brands to sign up to the
Courtauld Commitment.
- Warburtons successful launch of a new 'mid sized' loaf is one of the ways in which
Warburtons is helping to reduce
packaging usage as well as food waste in the home.
