apetito - Case study: Fewer transport miles
As part of its commitment to achieving 'fewer and
friendlier' food transport miles, apetito is measuring and
targeting the carbon footprint of its transport operations
based on fuel used. The company is seeking fuel
savings by replacing its trailer fleet with units fitted with
aerodynamic packages that have the potential to save
about 4% of fuel. It is also using double-decker trailers
where possible.
apetito has almost completed the replacement of all
tractor and rigid units with Euro V format vehicles which
produce significantly lower pollutant emissions. The
company is also looking to trial new tyres in the first
quarter of 2010 to improve fuel efficiency further.
A full-time driver trainer is employed to help maintain
best standards of safety and efficiency – and to keep
environmental impacts down. In addition, the company is
investigating an IT-based transport planning solution, and
a transport management system, to help the driver trainer
focus on where best to work on driver traits.
