General Mills - Case study: Fewer transport miles
General Mills UK has further developed its European freight strategy so that it provides a
greener way of getting
popular brands such as Green Giant, Old El Paso, Nature
Valley and Wanchai Ferry to its retail customers.
New sea freight distribution agreements mean that 90 per cent of the products
heading to the UK from General Mills' plants in northern Spain and the south of
France are now
coming by sea, compared with 70 per cent previously. As
a result, 2,150,000 road miles will be saved transporting
products.
The foods are carried as sea freight from Bilbao
to Liverpool before being transported to their final
destinations by road. All containers are fully loaded to
maximise the space used. Pallets are then reduced in size
once in the UK to meet customer specifications.
