Müller Dairy (UK) - Case study: Zero waste to landfill
Like other FDF members, Müller Dairy is working with the
FareShare charity to divert surplus products, which would
otherwise be considered waste, to disadvantaged people in
local communities around the country.
Müller has committed to tough targets to reduce the amount
of waste it sends to landfill – it wants to achieve a 66%
reduction by 2011, based on what it sent to landfill in 2007,
and wants to be sending zero to landfill by 2015.
While it is working hard to reduce as much waste as
possible from its processes, there are times when products
that are perfectly edible, and still within their 'best before'
dates, do not make it to retailers in time. Working with
FareShare ensures that this food can go to a good use and
the company's Shropshire site is now the main supplier of
yogurts to the charity.
Müller believes the partnership offers a clear social benefit
as well as providing another important strand to its
environmental work – for which it won Gold in the 2009 FDF
Community Partnership Awards.
