Nestlé UK - Case study: Zero waste to landfill
Alongside the company's food industry peers, Nestlé works with charity FareShare
to redistribute quality surplus food to vulnerable people in the community
around the country. In 2008, food from Nestlé provided over half a million meals
(523,820) for those in need.
Nestlé helped FareShare set up FareShare 1st to create an environmentally
friendly means to dispose of any food that couldn't go to local charities. By offering
both a food redistribution and food disposal solution, it is a one stop shop for
surplus food from the food and beverage industry.
In 2008, 1,294 tonnes less waste and surplus went to landfill, saving 5,826
tonnes of CO2 emissions. For Nestlé, landfill is used only as a last resort.
