Case Study: Unilever UK
In 2008, Flora carried out extensive research into cooking facilities
and practices in schools. The research revealed that primary
schools need more support not only to increase the availability
of cooking lessons, but to make them more stimulating, and to
improve the quality and quantity of their cooking equipment.
To address these needs, Flora developed the 'Flora Cooking with
Schools' programme – a free initiative open to all primary schools
in the UK - which puts healthy eating at the heart of the classroom
by enabling teachers to show children how to prepare and cook
healthy food in a fun and engaging way.
The scheme works by
encouraging schools to collect tokens from special packs of Flora
and exchange them for free cooking equipment. Each participating
school also receives a registration pack full of teaching resources
and aids.
Since its launch, the scheme has enjoyed some great results, with
over 60% of all UK primary schools having registered and almost
£269,000 worth of cooking equipment provided.
In fact, more than
one million children have had extra cooking equipment brought
into their classroom as a result of the programme.
On top of this,
130 live activity days have taken place in schools through the Flora
Cooking With Schools road shows, and over 15,000 educational
DVDs have been taken home to parents to further extend the reach
of the campaign.
