Case study: General Mills
The General Mills Youth Buses have provided a safe haven
to tens of thousands of children over the last six years. This
year 10,028 young people came on-board and 1,099 received
formal accreditation certifi cates relating to the courses taught
on the buses.
General Mills UK & Ireland is one of the fastest growing
food companies in the market with a portfolio that includes
Häagen-Dazs, Old El Paso and Green Giant sweetcorn. Part
of the world's sixth largest food company, General Mills
recently ranked 8th in the Top 50 Best Workplaces UK.
The project - which relates to the company's ethos of
Nourishing Lives - involved refi tting two buses dubbed
'The Point' and 'The Transporter', providing mobile youth
provisioning for the youths in the Borough of Hillingdon,
who would otherwise be left to walk the streets.
The buses are equipped with state of art audio-visual
technology, vocational e-learning access, gaming platforms,
a test kitchen for dietary education and counselling suites.
The local police have produced reports showing that the
buses have been instrumental in reducing youth crime and
sexually transmitted diseases amongst younger people.
General Mills staff are hugely proud of the impact their
buses have made and feel that
work with the local community
really does form the heart and
soul of their company.
