Case study: Samworth Brothers
Over the past few years Samworth Brothers has been involved
in a number of projects with charities and community based
organisations aimed at improving social inclusion. From this
work Bradgate Bakery, a division of Samworth, became
aware of the tremendous need for additional support to assist
people with disabilities getting back into the workplace.
The Remploy project aims to address this need by
supporting people with disabilities through the recruitment
process and by changing the attitude that people with
disabilities will struggle to cope with working in a fast-moving
chilled food factory.
Remploy assisted Paul Rudd, who has a hearing-impairment,
back into work after a two-year period of unemployment
after being made redundant. Support offered by the scheme
included confi dence boosting sessions, interview techniques
and help with writing his CV. After three meetings at Bradgate
Bakery, Paul was carefully risk assessed and appraised within
the work environment before being offered a three-week work
trial. The trial proved so successful that Paul was offered a full
time position.
Helping people with disabilities get over the barriers faced when
trying to get back into work has not only helped Bradgate
Bakery give something back to its community, it has also helped
the business, and in particular its management, to challenge
negative perceptions of disabled workers in the workplace.
