Case Study: Samworth Brothers
Chilled food manufacturer Samworth Brothers has a
strong commitment to corporate social responsibility,
with a keen focus on education. All of the manufacturer's
independent business units around Cornwall and Leicester
have links with schools and colleges in their local communities.
In 2009, Samworth company Ginsters, manufacturer of chilled
short-life pastry products, launched an online educational
outreach project to provide students aged 14 to 19 with
an educational experience linked to real business issues.
Using Skype, webcams were set up between Ginsters and
a classroom at a local secondary school, providing business
experts at the factory with a means of communicating directly
with students.
Ginsters' business team were able to set team
projects for students, the results of which students presented
back using the webcam. The classroom experience was
supported by an educational website, teachers' packs and a
Facebook site.
To date, 960 pupils from 24 schools have been
involved, a result that could not have been achieved through
traditional school visits alone.
A number of Ginsters' staff have now been in
volved in the
project, which has benefi ted their personal development.
