Case Study: Alpro

Leading soya product supplier Alpro developed its 20:20 Vision in 2007 when it publicly declared that it would become carbon neutral by 2020. The company rigorously reassessed its processes across all areas of the business, looking for ways to reduce environmental impact. It also decided that as a company if it held sustainability and respect for the environment at its core, its actions in these areas would be exemplary.

2009 was a landmark year for Alpro as it achieved its goals across a number of production areas including: delivering direct benefi ts to the environment, to the business and to the local community. Reducing energy use was key to achieving Alpro's Vision, so it tackled this challenge head on looking for ways to reduce energy use across the business by following the principle that 'the greenest energy is the energy you don't consume'.

Changing processes and establishing new protocols has helped Alpro reduce its CO2 emissions by a further 43% in 2009, in addition to signifi cant reductions achieved in previous years.

Alpro has also achieved its ISO 14001 environmental accreditation, validating a great deal of its sustainability activities and providing a structured way of proving the credibility of the company's rigorous environmental programme.
