Case Study: Coca Cola Enterprises
As one of the largest users of packaging in Great Britain,
Coca-Cola Enterprises (CCE) understands that it has
considerable responsibility in this area. The company
knows that packaging is the largest contributor to their
products' carbon footprint – accounting for between 30%
and 70% of the total emissions, and that using recycled
materials and recycling can reduce this by up to 60%.
CCE is committed to recovering the equivalent to 100%
of its packaging by 2020. However, despite increasing
investment in recycling facilities, on-the-go recycling
facilities are still scarce. Knowing that their consumers
drink their products while they're out and about, CCE
launched Recycle Zone in partnership with WRAP (Waste
Resources & Action Programme).
The scheme is the first
branded on-the-go recycling scheme in the UK, giving
people a place to put their empty bottles and cans where
they will be collected and recycled. The scheme has already achieved its target
of 80 Zones and set a new target of 120 Zones by the three-year deadline in
March 2011.
