Case Study: United Biscuits
At the start of 2008, United Biscuits (UB) formally launched
its 'Achieving Sustainability' environmental programme.
This involved publicly committing to a wide range of clear,
measurable environmental goals and implementing a
business structure to deliver them.
UB's scheme focuses on: reducing carbon emissions,
reducing waste sent to landfi ll, reducing water use,
reducing packaging waste, driving environmentally friendly
transport, and increasing sustainable sourcing. UB reports
annually on its progress, highlighting the importance the
company places on its environmental programme, both
internally and externally.
Progress over the last two years has been excellent, and in
2009 UB upped its efforts to engage its employees in the
programme, for example by running environmental roadshows
at each site and encouraging employees to make their own
environmental pledges. UB has also worked to educate its
local communities about its environmental programme.
As a result, progress in 2009 included UB reducing the
amount of non food waste it sent to landfi ll by 44%, reducing
water use by 28% since 2007 – exceeding its 25% target 10
years early, and reducing transport carbon emissions by 29%
since 2005 – exceeding its target of 22% by 2012.
Achieving targets early gave UB the opportunity to challenge itself further and
raise the bar in several areas including: resetting its target for water
reduction to a 45% reduction by 2020 and
reducing its carbon emissions by 40% by 2012.
