Case Study: United Biscuits
As an employer of over 8,500 people, the health, safety and
welfare of United Biscuits' (UB) employees is a top priority. For
many years UB has run occupational health services at its sites
and provided health screenings, medical consultations and
health awareness campaigns.
At the end of 2008, UB launched its 'Building our Community'
programme – part of which aims to improve the wellbeing of
consumers as well as employees. The programme was further
extended in 2009 with the launch of 'WellWise', UB's workplace
wellbeing scheme.
WellWise provides a programme of activities
and events to educate employees about healthy lifestyles;
encourage them to be more active; help employees address
health issues; and promote UB as a great place to work. UB
employees can now have frequent mini MOT lifestyle checks;
access sports equipment; and are offered other services on site
including counselling, physiotherapy and chiropody.
UB employees have reacted positively to the scheme, which has
resulted in reduced absence rates, a reduction in cases
of work related stress, and a low employee turnover rate.
