Reducing CO2 emissions

3.7% per tonne of food and this has led to an emissions reduction of 4% per
tonne.

emissions by decreasing overall energy usage in its
factories and boosting its use of renewable energy.
- Unilever has achieved a 39% reduction in CO2 from energy per tonne of production since
1995.

Zero waste to landfill
- Alara Wholefoods is the first food
manufacturer to be certified as a zero waste company
thanks to its efforts to ensure nothing is sent to landfill or
incineration from its factory in King's Cross, London.
- Coca-Cola Enterprisescontinues to increase the amount
of waste it recycles from its manufacturing sites in Great
Britain as part of its aim to send zero waste to landfill.
- McCain currently disposes of less than 1% of food and packaging waste from production
in landfill and is working to reduce this figure on an annual basis.
- Müller Dairy is working with the
FareShare charity to divert surplus products, which would
otherwise be considered waste, to disadvantaged people in
local communities around the country.
- Jordans & Ryvita Company has transformed its
approach to waste management and, as a result,
reduced the amount of waste from its Stockport
manufacturing site sent to landfill by 96%.

Reducing packaging
- Britvic has recently reduced the amount of glass used to bottle its popular J2O juice
drink as part of its ongoing work to reduce packaging and energy use.
- Cadbury is implementing an
average 32% packaging reduction across its selection box range
- Dairy Crest has developed a number of innovations with its retail customers to reduce
packaging and packaging waste
- Kraft Foods UK and Ireland continued its work on the
sustainability of its Kenco coffee range, with the relaunch
of its new Kenco Eco Refill packs.
- Mars took part in projects with WRAP to trial methods for
lightweighting glass containers and to redesign the tins
used for its wrapped chocolates.
- Warburtons successful launch of a new 'mid sized' loaf is one of the ways they are helping
to reduce packaging usage as well as food waste in the home.

Fewer transport miles
- apetito is measuring and
targeting the carbon footprint of its transport operations
based on fuel used.
- General Mills has further developed its European
freight strategy so that it provides a greener way of getting
popular brands such as Green Giant, Old El Paso, Nature
Valley and Wanchai Ferry to its retail customers.
- Nestlé UK's better utilisation of vehicles, training drivers, sharing
transport with others in the food industry and regionalising
its delivery network have led to significant reductions in
Nestlé's transport needs.
- Premier Foods' Grocery Division improved its
vehicle loadfill by 7% which saved the equivalent of 2,500
deliveries that year.
- Wrigley is achieving fewer and friendlier food transport
miles following a review of its UK food distribution.
- Young's Seafood has been working hard with its haulier to prepare
for the inclusion of the Greener Food Transport Clause in
contracts due for renewal in May 2010.

Water efficiency
- Burton's Foods conducted a fullscale water investigation across all sites, relative to the
tonnes of product baked.
- R&R Ice Cream has been focusing on ways to maximise
efficiency through the introduction of new technological
advances designed to improve water reuse.
- United Biscuits has achieved a
17% water use reduction in 2008.
- William Jackson Food Group / Hazeldene has
managed to save in excess of 20% of its water usage at its Wigan plant, some
70,000 m3 a year.
