Karel de Gucht will be the guest speaker at the China Association Summer Lunch and speaking on the topic of EU-China Trade & Investment Relations.

As Commissioner for Trade, Karel's role is to pursue ongoing efforts towards free trade to the benefit of all, through designing, implementing and communicating EU Trade Policies to the open market. Commissioner de Gucht took position in February 2010, and aims to shape a trade environment that benefits both people and business. In this context completing the Doha trade round will come as a major goal.

Other important dossiers include the conclusion of pending free Trade Agreements, coordinating the Trans-Atlantic Economic Council with the US and the High Level Economic Dialogue with China, and building up on the success of these dialogues to strengthen economic relations with other strategic trade partners.

A Belgian politician and trained lawyer, Karel's previous positions included European Commissioner for Development and Humanitarian Aid; Deputy Prime Minister of Belgium; Minister for Foreign Affairs & European Affairs; and Minister for International Trade. Karel continues to give several hours of lectures in European law at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), where he was a Professor in European Law for over 18 years.
