PRESS RELEASE
Speaking on behalf of FDF Seafood Group, Andrew Kuyk, Director of Sustainability
at the Food and Drink Federation said:
“The outcome of Tuesday's discussions on the future of the EU's Fishery Policy
represents an essential first step in what is likely to be a long and difficult
negotiation”.
“FDF and its member companies have consistently been working with a wide range
of stakeholders, including an industry alliance with WWF and retailers, to
press
for changes to fisheries management. These are based on long-term plans for
protecting and rebuilding stocks to deliver sustainable supplies of quality
fish to
consumers at prices they can afford, enabling them to reap the huge health
benefits from eating more seafood”.
“We therefore welcome the UK Government's stance in pressing for radical
reform, but these most recent discussions highlight the difficulties the EU
faces in
trying to make fundamental changes to the way it manages its fish resources”.
“For some time, fish processors have been leading the way in building
sustainable supply chains from the many examples well managed fisheries in
other parts
of the world”.
