Premier Foods - Case study: Fewer transport miles

In July 2008, Premier Foods, the largest food company in the UK, signed up to FDF's Checklist and Clause for Greener Food Transport (pdf, 769kb). This reflected the company's commitment to reducing the number of miles its vehicles travel on UK roads each year.

To achieve fewer and friendlier food miles, Premier has invested £1.3 million in its transport fleet to increase the number of double deck trailer units from 30 to 55 overall.

This investment allows the company to greatly increase its capability for achieving fewer and friendlier food transport miles by increasing the volume carried by individual vehicles and cutting unnecessary mileage.

Overall, Premier's use of double deck trailers has saved 2.6 million road miles in 2008 compared to 2007, saved 1.2 million litres of diesel fuel and reduced tailpipe CO2 emissions by 3,200 tonnes.
