Annual Review 2008: Leading from the front
Jim Moseley, Managing Director, General Mills UK
FDF's Food Safety and Science Steering Group Chair
FDF's Food Safety and Science Division has been very
active over the last year, representing members' interests
in shaping the regulatory framework and exerting our
influence to ensure that industry's future needs are met.
For example, FDF's very clear and well considered
position on the EU Food Information Regulation has been
highly influential in guiding CIAA, the industry's European
organisation, towards its own agreed position, and we
have been actively influencing this complex and lengthy
negotiation as a whole.
During the year, FDF's food safety team worked closely
with members to ensure the views of industry were
reflected in the wake of the publication of official surveys
on issues such as acrylamide and Listeria. We also
supported members during a number of food chain
incidents, ensuring a proportionate response from
regulators in the UK and Europe.
In terms of nutrition-based topics we have entered a
very active phase of working with members and the
Food Standards Agency (FSA) on its saturated fat and
energy programme, ensuring dialogue on this topic can
be conducted in a productive way, without falling foul
of competition law. In addition, we pulled together a
consortium of industry partners to ensure that the FSA
adopts a sensible definition of fibre.
