Annual Review 2009: Leading from the front
FDF: Steered by our members
By Jim Moseley, Managing Director, General Mills UK
FDF's Food Safety and Science Division continues to
work on behalf of members across a wide range of
issues covering food safety, incident prevention and
management, legislative proposals and nutrition.
Despite the general trend to base policy on 'common
sense', we continue to hold decision makers to the need
to use robust science and thorough impact assessments
to underpin policy decisions. This is especially the case on
nutrition topics such as voluntary targets for reformulation
and recommendations on portion size, where FDF's
Nutrition Committee is playing a key role to ensure our
positions are credible and justified.
Most of the regulation impacting our sector comes from
Europe – and FDF plays an active role in Brussels. I
am a member of the Board and Executive Committee
of our European trade association, the CIAA and FDF
is represented on the CIAA's Food and Consumer
Policy Steering Group and on a number of technical
committees. Our active role and presence ensures that the
development of CIAA positions and lobbying strategies is
consistent with the priorities and messages we agree in
the UK.
During the year we continued to engage with regulators
and stakeholders to ensure that new technologies.
