FDF Response to the Defra Consultation on the Food Information Regulations 2013

These are the two main issues covered in FDF's response
  1. FDF supports a proportionate approach to enforcement but are concerned about how the approach set out in the consultation i.e. improvement notices will work in practice. We also feel that enforcement should be consistent across the devolved administrations and are concerned that Scotland intends to take a different approach.
  2. We support the Government's approach to minimising regulatory burdens on businesses but there are actually a number of the EU permitted national measures that we think should be adopted. In particular, national measures on the voluntary indication of reference intakes for specific population groups - this will allow GDAs to be developed for children at a national level and is supported by a number of members that currently use them. We also support maintaining the current requirements for QUID on meat products sold non-prepacked and the name of the food on foods sold for non-prepacked rather than relying on the provisions of the Unfair Commercial Practices Directive.
