FDF Response to BIS Skills for Sustainable Growth
Back to competitiveness responses index
October 2010
The level of skills and training in the UK food and drink industry is crucial to
its competitiveness. Our sector is the UK's largest manufacturing employer with
projections indicating that an additional 137,000 new workers will be required
by 2017. It is therefore crucial that an effective and sustainable skills
system
is put in place to facilitate an efficient, productive and innovative workforce.
FDF's response to this consultation therefore highlights the need for policy
makers to implement a simplified, demand-led skills system that places a high
level
of importance on employer-led apprenticeship provision and attracting young
talent into our sector. We also stress the requirement for Government to commit
public funding to support the supply of Science Technology Engineering and
Maths
skills.
