Defra Consultation: The Socio-economic Aspects of Genetically Modified (GM) Crop
Cultivation
Our response is made in the context of there being, as yet, no commercial
cultivation of GM crops in the UK and only limited experience elsewhere in the
EU.
Moreover, as market conditions in the EU dictate that UK food and drink
manufacturers source their raw materials from non-GM supply chains, we have no
direct
experience of the import or use of GM crops. However, increasing pressure on
availability and price of non-GM sources of certain crops, and new developments
which
may in time produce crops modified with traits perceived as more beneficial to
consumers, and/or more sustainable from an agricultural and supply chain
perspective, we anticipate that GM-derived food ingredients will enter the UK
and EU
markets in the foreseeable future.
