FDF Response to BIS/DECC Consultation on Meeting the Low Carbon Skills Challenge
Back to competitiveness responses index
October 2009
As the biggest manufacturer in the UK, food and drink producers have a big role
to play in helping to shift the UK to a low carbon economy. In light of this
FDF
felt obligated to respond to the BIS/DECC low carbon skills consultation using
existing FDF policies, agreed by members, on skills and the environment to
inform
our response, see attached below.
Improving the level of skills within our workforce in a way that reduces the
impact on the environment is central to increasing competitiveness through
greater
productivity and efficiency. This is particularly important within UK food
manufacturing and to the economy as a whole as the sector is also the largest
manufacturing employer.
Our view is that Government must continue to fund support for STEM skills,
provide better careers advice and through this promote low carbon careers
whilst
ensuring that skills delivery is demand-led and responsive to employer needs.
