FDF's evidence to the low pay commission on the national minimum wage
Back to competitiveness responses index
September 2010
FDF has submitted its response to the Low Pay Commission's consultation on
setting the National Minimum Wage (NMW) for 2011. In addition, FDF met with the
Low
Pay Commission on Friday 10 September to present evidence from our sector to
inform the LPC's report to Government on the minimum wage.
As in previous years, FDF has called for a repositioning of the NMW to be called
a 'Standard Pay Rate' in an effort to move away from the potential stigma of
the
'minimum' element of the level as well as a call for certainty in NMW rates set
in the future. The introduction of a formula to determine future increases in
the level of the NMW was again proposed as the movement in basic rates of pay
that
have been reached across the economy over the previous 12 months.
In light of the impact of the forthcoming legislative changes that are being
placed on employers, FDF has asked for a similar level of caution to be
maintained in setting the rates
for 2011.
