European Commission Public Consultation on Trade Policy
FDF has responded to the European Commission's (EC) public consultation on the
future direction of EU trade policy. Later this year the EC plans to set out
its
policy, outlining how trade policy can help to achieve the objectives of the
'Europe 2020' Strategy for smart, sustainable and inclusive growth.
FDF has responded to the questions posed in the online questionnaire,
emphasising the need for the Commission's departments to liaise more closely on
proposals
and actions that have external impacts. In particular DG's Agri, Trade and
Sanco
need to work more closely together on the agriculture and food aspects of the
EU's trade relations with Third Countries. EU trade policy must support a
thriving
and sustainable food sector in the EU by driving clear and consistent policies
in all areas which contribute to this.
EU trade policy should also enhance the recommendations identified in the EC
Communication on the better functioning of the food supply chain – particularly
improving its resilience to price volatility and fostering the competitiveness
of
the European food supply chain across all Member States.
