The State of the Industry
David Jago, Mintel
The UK market faces some significant challenges, with falling penetration of
chocolate, rising commodity prices, and pressure from bodies such as the FSA
who
are pushing for greater focus on and promotion of healthier products.
Nevertheless, half of UK consumers like to treat themselves to things that they
know are not good for them, and a third buy chocolate on impulse. Despite
concerns over calories and fat content, adults like to reward themselves, and
their
kids, with sweets and chocolate.

Labelling and Consumers Session
Health claims
Dr Alexander Schoch, Manager - Regulatory Affairs, The Beneo Institute
“Nothing is more constant than change” - this citation of the Greek Philosopher
Heraclites is particularly true when we have a look at the past years in the
food regulatory arena in Europe. While the overall aim and welcome approach of
this
development is to provide a harmonized legal framework for the EU 27 Member
States (e.g. for additives used or for mandatory labeling), nothing has been
discussed more controversially among all the stakeholders involved than the
Nutrition
and Health Claims Regulation (NHCR).

Labelling – Key Current Legal Developments & Their Practical Implications
Owen Warnock, Partner, Eversheds LLP
Food labelling is constantly in the news, but much of this relates to
initiatives by individual manufacturers and retailers and to non-statutory good
practice
schemes. Changes in the law are rare because they require enough agreement
amongst EU member states and MEPs for a European Regulation or Directive to be
adopted.

From Art to Science
Steve Diggines, Business Leader, STI and Simon Lawson, Marketing Manager, GEIP
“Art to science” is an on-going collaboration between GE, its partners and
customers to apply a rigorous and scientific approach to process optimisation
in the
Food Industry.
Sectors such as Food have lagged in the application of analytical tools and
techniques to optimise manufacturing processes largely because the business
case is
not there for product advantage.
The presenters propound that there is a demonstrable business case for applying
these techniques for process advantage, largely around reducing waste and
improving efficiency of food production with associated positive implications
for food
safety.
