Case Study: Coca Cola Great Britain

The Coca-Cola head office in Hammersmith has been developing its wellness programme for a number of years now, supporting staff in terms of diet, activity and emotional resilience.

Coca cola Some health initiatives are standard across the Coca-Cola system regardless of location or grade including:

  • Family-friendly, flexible working policies and practices
  • Free telephone health advisory service
  • Subsidised staff restaurants which include healthy options
  • Free supply of hot and cold drinks to promote hydration, including bottled mineral water and zero sugar products.

Individual sites then offer additional initiatives to promote health and wellness in the workplace. Under the broader 'Great Place to Work' platform, workplace health and vitality became a core work focus in 2008 with the creation of the 'wellness team', who not only deliver activities but also collate feedback from staff on initiatives aimed at supporting their wellbeing. Senior management, employee representatives, catering and fitness staff are all engaged to ensure a holistic approach.

During 2009, a number of 'taster' initiatives were trialled to establish what worked best for Hammersmith-based staff. Already on offer was an on-site gym and studio space with daily classes, on-site health and fitness testing with optional weight management, free daily desk-side fruit, on-site massage, a subsidised cycle to work scheme, and regular promotion of physical activity, such as team gym challenges.

As a result of staff feedback the following additional initiatives are being rolled out in 2010:

  • Guideline Daily Amount (GDA) labelling in the staff restaurant
  • Stairwell communications to promote usage
  • A running club for all levels
  • Partnership with the local Primary Care Trust's smoking cessation programme
  • An increased variety of on-site classes (pilates, salsa and street dance).

A review of on-site gym and studio facilities is currently taking place to understand further what would motivate staff to use them more.

In addition to their own workplace health programme, Coca Cola has been working with Homerton University Hospital in East London in setting up and supporting a workplace initiative for their staff.

Launched in January 2010, the project is recruiting and supporting a bank of wellbeing champions that can work alongside the new on-site lifestyle coordinator. Together, based on staff feedback, they will be providing information and access to physical activity facilities on-site and in the locality. This forms part of the wider HR programme for staff development and support at the hospital.
