Case Study: Kelloggs

The Kellogg's Fit for Life, Fit for Work programme encourages employees to protect, maintain and improve their health by increasing levels of exercise and activity and understanding the importance of a healthier diet.

Woman have her body fat percentage measured The company utilises partnerships with local leisure and health facilities and sports organisations to provide a number of activities for employees.

Every spring and autumn in the UK, the Fit for Life programme offers Kellogg's people the chance to have free health tests (including blood pressure, cholesterol, body fat, BMI measurements and general fitness assessments from Kellogg's healthcare professionals and partners from Urbanwalks and Trafford Community Leisure Trust). Annual Fit for Life events include support of the Blood Pressure Association's 'Know Your Numbers' week, stress awareness events, inter-company football and golf competitions and an activity week.

The events are supported by Kellogg's Health and Wellbeing Nutritionists and contract catering companies. Healthy food choices in the restaurants are promoted under the Fit for Life logo. Kellogg's also offers lifestyle advice on how to make positive changes, including increasing activity levels, dietary advice, sensible alcohol consumption and smoking cessation.

To help spring board those recommendations, both Manchester sites have well equipped gyms, while at the Wrexham site there is a scheme which enables employees to use local leisure facilities for free. There are also opportunities for employees at all locations to receive advice from an activity motivator on how to begin, maintain or improve current levels of activity. The activity motivator promotes and encourages participation in local events.

Kellogg's support of the Amateur Swimming Association since 1996 has provided opportunities such as family swim events and Swimfit programmes for Kellogg's employees. Swimfit is a web-based resource providing structure and motivation to encourage staff to use their local pools as a 'gym'.

Walking is promoted by two walking leaflets that were produced in association with Urban Walks which contain safe assessed routes that all employees can use to and from work or at lunchtimes. Kellogg's also runs lunchtime walking events to encourage employees to get out walking in their lunch hour.

The Cycle to Work scheme enables Kellogg's to offer employees the chance to buy a tax-free bike. Refresher cycling courses have been organised, bike racks have been installed on-site and bike maintenance workshops take place on an annual basis. Kellogg's has even signed up Olympic gold medalist Sir Chris Hoy to show how much it loves cycling!
