January 2017

In November 2016 the UK Governments published a consultation on new packaging recycling business targets for 2018-20 for overall recovery and recycling and material specific targets for paper, steel, aluminium and wood. The consultation closed on 6 January 2017.

In its response FDF underlines the need for stable, fair and joined up policy approach towards dealing with used packaging in order to encourage medium to long term investment decisions which will in turn lead to lower overall costs for business. Furthermore providing visibility of future business recycling targets will make an important contribution to this. In terms of detailed comments FDF's response supports Option 3 for future targets (with an enhancement for the wood target)as offering the best compromise between being on the right trajectory to meet the proposed 2025 targets in the Circular Economy Package and avoiding step change increases which would be damaging for business. This was essentially in line with the Valpak response
