David Harries, Head of Food and Drink Federation Cymru, said:

“We look forward to working in active partnership with the new Welsh government to address the challenges facing Wales’ food and drink manufacturers and to support a sector that plays a vital role in our economy and food security.

“Food and drink manufacturing in Wales is the largest manufacturing sector in the country, and is central to our daily lives and the health of our economy. It is also a powerful force for good, socially and economically. When looking at the farm-to-fork supply chain, it is one of the nation’s largest, and most economically critical, sectors.

“Wales needs a strong, resilient, sustainable food and drink sector, but during recent years, our industry has faced many significant headwinds. A crucial first step for the new Welsh Government will be early and sustained engagement with industry, so that Ministers and Cabinet Secretaries fully understand the inflationary impact of policy decisions before they are taken. At the same time, the food and drink sector must be prioritised by government and enterprise agencies, with a sharper focus on driving growth, productivity and investment across the supply chain.

“Food businesses are facing sustained cost pressures, and government decisions must not add further regulatory or charging burdens that risk pushing costs even higher for businesses and shoppers. Manufacturers also need confidence that environmental and climate policies will be aligned across all the UK’s governments, as well as being practical to deliver and supportive of businesses as they work towards net zero. A clear, long‑term plan is essential to give companies the certainty they need to invest.

“FDF Cymru is fully committed to being a pragmatic, trusted and solutions-focused partner, who will provide evidence and insights from businesses operating on the ground.  I look forward to working with you and your team to ensure that we have an environment and regulatory framework where our industry continues to invest, employ and thrive in Wales.”
