Peterhead Academy pupil wins Global Burger Challenge 2025 with ‘Mediterranean Munch’ burger creation
Peterhead Academy S2 pupil Hannah Bruce has been announced as the winner of the Global Burger Challenge 2025 – a collaboration between Quality Meat Scotland (QMS) and Food and Drink Federation (FDF) Scotland – following an exciting awards ceremony held at the Royal Highland Show.
Hannah’s winning creation, the ‘Mediterranean Munch’ burger, beat off a record number of entries by wowing the judging panel with its creative blend of global flavours and health-conscious ingredients, all built around Scotch Lamb. Her Mediterranean-inspired creation balanced bold spices and fresh herbs including mint, olives and a special sauce with a focus on nutrition, sustainability, and presentation – a combination that secured her the top spot in this year’s challenge.
The Global Burger Challenge encourages pupils aged 11 to 15 across Scotland to explore the journey of food from farm to fork. Using QMS’s Farming Foodsteps resources, pupils developed a burger inspired by world cuisines while considering nutrition, sustainability, cost, and marketing.
Two other entries were recognised with Highly Commended awards:
- ‘The Fiery Fiesta Burger’ by Ollie Cram, Tynecastle High School
- ‘The Lambtastic Naanwich’ by Abi Kubaca and Amelia Murray, George Watson’s College
Tracy Martin, Reputation Manager at QMS, said: “The Global Burger Challenge has been a fantastic way to engage pupils with Scotland’s world-class food and farming industry. It’s been brilliant to see such a high standard of entries this year – the refreshed theme for 2025 has inspired an eclectic mix of flavour combinations and Scotch has been taken on a taste journey all around the world - each creation has shown real creativity and thoughtfulness.
“Hannah’s ‘Mediterranean Munch’ burger was a real standout, showcasing how Scotch Lamb can be the star of a dish while also meeting health and sustainability goals. It’s wonderful to see young people learning how to make informed food choices, exploring the versatility of Scotch and reflecting on our brand’s contribution to our economy, society and planet.”
Moira Stalker, Skills Manager at FDF Scotland, added: “The Global Burger Challenge is a brilliant platform for pupils to build practical skills and discover the wide range of career opportunities within Scotland’s food and drink industry. From product development and marketing to understanding supply chains and sustainability, this initiative helps equip our future workforce with the knowledge and confidence to thrive.”
