Felix - The FLEX Programme

Topics

Felix launched FLEX to "upcycle" industrial surplus through manufacturing intervention such as canning and freezing. This innovative manufacturing process transforms bulk, short-dated ingredients into long-life products for charities, preventing edible surplus food from becoming waste.

To solve the "ticking clock" of food expiration by creating ambient canned meals with three years shelf life, and bypassing logistical barriers, catering bulk formats were converted into smaller packs for pantry style charities.

FLEX has manufactured over 1,000,000 meal equivalents. Supported 4,133 charities across 99% of the UK, diverted 374,290kg of CO2e of surplus food from landfill, and helped food manufacturing partners achieve their ESG goals.

A cross-sector collaboration between partners like Greenyard Frozen and WeCanFoods, and food donations from growers and food manufactures have helped FLEX to support 8,000 frontline community organisations across the UK.

The FLEX model was scaled by diversifying our food processors and onboarding four new manufactures. This creates a more resilient and long-term supply chain that ensures industrial food surplus is always redirected to social good.

Judges' Comment

“This is a very impactful and inspiring project and has found a great way to bring both environmental and sustainability benefits with a positive impact on health for those in disadvantaged groups, showing clearly the benefit that this has for both industry and communities. It’s also impressive to see the scale of impact achieved and the number of stakeholders involved.”
