In 2012 the Environment Agency(EA) consulted on a new methodology to derive
Environmental Assessment Levels (EALs). EALs represent a pollutant concentration
in ambient air at which no significant risks to human health are expected.

Now the EA is planning to implement this revised methodology along with changing
the EALs for 10 existing substances and introducing two new substance EALs
associated with carbon capture and storage. These proposals have been developed
in conjunction with Public Health England.

The EA wishes to consult stakeholders on the new EALs before using them in its
permitting activities. Once the new EALs are published the EA plans to implement
their introduction either when a new permit application or substantial permit variation
is made, or following sector reviews.

The consultation runs until 7 February 2021 and both the consultation document
and supporting documents can be found here. A list of the 12 substances affected
is set out in Table 1, page 8 of the consultation document.
