We will be looking at the future perspective on risk assessment and management and cover issues including allergens; new risk models in food provision; risk assessment in an international context; climate risks; future regulation and risk communications.

Keynote speech from Rebecca Sudworth will give a future look at the FSA with respect to risk assessment & management.

The event will also feature an 'Ask the Experts' session on food hygiene risks with our affiliate member ACO. An expert panel of academics and food safety professionals will talk about some of the live issues facing the industry on site.

Peter Maddox
Director, WRAP UK

Peter Maddox is Director of WRAP UK. He has been with WRAP for 12 years, initially working on developing markets in the UK for recycled materials and working closely with Defra on environmental policy. He led the development of WRAP's Resource Revolution 2015-20 business plan and established the Resource London partnership with the London Waste and Recycling Board. He became Director in 2016 and is currently responsible for WRAP's work on food waste, plastics, clothing and resource management in the UK. Before WRAP, he spent nearly 20 years working for BP in the chemicals sector in UK and France in research, manufacturing and strategy roles. He has a BA and DPhil in chemistry from the University of Oxford. He is a member of Green Alliance. Outside work, Peter enjoys cycling, reading, walking and real ale.

Ragnar E. Löfstedt
Professor of Risk Management and the Director of King's Centre of Risk Management, King's College

Ragnar E. Löfstedt is Professor of Risk Management and the Director of King's Centre of Risk Management, King's College London, UK where he teaches and conducts research on risk communication and management.

Previously he was a Reader in Social Geography at the University of Surrey, UK. He was also an Instructor at the Harvard Center for Risk Analysis, Harvard School of Public Health where he directed the Risk Communication Challenge Course for continuing education professionals. He is Adjunct Professor at the Department of Engineering and Public Policy, Carnegie Mellon University, and he is a Visiting Professor at the Centre for Public Sector Research, Gothenburg University, Sweden.

Rebecca Sudworth
Director of Policy & Risk Management, FSA

Rebecca joined the FSA in April 2019 as Director of Policy. Rebecca has extensive experience as a Senior Civil Servant in the Treasury and in the Department for Work and Pensions. Her previous civil service roles have focused on social policy - particularly benefits design and reform, labour market policy and programmes to support the most disadvantaged into work.

More recently, Rebecca has held Director of Strategy roles at Peabody, one of the UK's largest housing associations, and at City, University of London. She has also been a Trustee of Shaw Trust (a national charity helping people gain an education, enter work, develop their career, improve their wellbeing or rebuild their lives) and Chair of Ixion Holdings, a subsidiary of Shaw Trust delivering education and learning nationwide.

Ross Yarham
Senior Scientific Officer, FSA

Ross Yarham has a background in biotechnology & analytical biosciences. He started his career as an R&D scientist for Indoor Biotechnologies, leading the development of quantitative ELISA and multiplex immunoassays for detection of allergenic food proteins. He also contributed to work package 7 of the iFAAM project, with a focus on allergen analysis in food. Ross has a BSc (hons) in Biotechnology from Cardiff University.

Ross joined the Food Standards Agency in 2017 as manager of the Food Allergy & Intolerance Research Programme. Currently, one of Ross's main focuses is establishing the FSA's Adult Food Allergy Research Programme, having already commissioned a large study around the patterns and prevalence of adult food allergy in the UK. Ross is also leading on the development of better performance measures on the burden of food allergy in the UK by developing initiatives around quality of life, economic and clinical measures including the creation of a UK anaphylaxis registry. In addition to this, Ross leads on allergen risk assessment for food incidents at the FSA.
