Novel Food (NF)
The Novel Foods email alert group covers activities relating to novel foods and nanotechnology, and follows developing issues including novel food applications and its regulatory framework. The group collates relevant regulatory developments and supports the overarching work of the FDF's Food Safety Committee (FSC) and Food Ingredients (FIG) Committee.
Novel foods are foods which have not been widely consumed by people in the UK or EU before May 1997, meaning these foods don’t have a ‘history of consumption’. Novel foods need to be authorised before they can be placed on the market in Great Britain (GB) and Northern Ireland (NI(EU)). The European Union has a list of novel foods which have been authorised in the European Union. The FSA alongside the FSS have introduced a new register of authorised novel foods in Great Britain (GB).
