We are looking for a Head of UK Diet and Health Policy to join the Food and Drink Federation on a maternity cover basis.

This is a senior role leading FDF’s policy development work on diet, health and nutrition. You will be advising companies on scientific, regulatory and political developments, helping them understand a complex and evolving policy landscape and ensuring the food and drink industry has an informed and constructive voice in discussions about the nation’s health.

You will work closely with colleagues across FDF, engage with government, regulators, industry and NGOs, and lead the Diet and Health Team.

Key responsibilities

  • Provide leadership and insight on UK Government and Devolved Nations diet and health policy, identifying likely future direction and helping shape practical responses for members.
  • Help develop and communicate a proactive vision for how the food and drink industry can support healthier diets and workplaces.
  • Provide strategic steer, scientific scrutiny and engagement on evolving nutrition and health topics.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues across FDF, particularly those in Communications and Corporate Affairs, as well as supporting our teams in Scotland and Wales.
  • Represent FDF externally, including on conference panels and in the media, and develop effective relationships with government officials, regulators, industry and NGOs.
  • Lead two FDF member committees, setting strategic work programmes that respond to policy developments and emerging issues.
  • Lead and manage the Diet and Health Team of three policy senior executives.

Requirements

Essential

  • Registered Dietitian or Registered Nutritionist.
  • Detailed knowledge of UK food policy relating to diet, health and nutrition and the food industry.
  • Experience of leading multiple projects and delivering effectively through colleagues and senior stakeholders.
  • Line management experience.
  • Ability to understand and communicate complex policy and scientific information clearly to different audiences.
  • Ability to think independently and turn ideas into structured, realistic plans.

Desirable

  • Experience of working within the food industry.
  • Experience of policy development within a trade association or similar member-led organisation, or within government.
  • Experience of presenting at conferences, participating in panel discussions and producing media briefings on high-profile or contested issues.
