Karen Betts tells future PM: The government must do more to support our industry

The Food and Drink Federation has written to all remaining Conservative leadership contenders outlining policies we would like to see implemented to benefit food and drink manufacturing in the UK and ease the cost of living crisis.

Following the resignation of Boris Johnson, the Conservative party is currently in the process of selecting a new leader and therefore Prime Minister. As the biggest UK manufacturing sector, we feel it is important that prospective candidates get an overview of the issues facing our industry and policies we feel can combat the cost of living crisis, helping tackle the unprecedented rise in costs for both businesses and consumers.
Our letter outlines how companies in our sector are doing everything they can to contain the impacts of inflation. As an industry we know we have a responsibility to provide tasty, healthy and affordable food, and we are cutting costs everywhere we can to contain price rises for shoppers. But there are limits – our companies must also remain viable if they are to be a vibrant part of our economy into the future.
That is why we are asking a future Prime Minister to look again at VAT, business rates, R&D tax credits and the Apprenticeship levy, to help us address rising costs, ensuring our industry continues to thrive.
