FDF Scotland reacts to the Scottish Parliament Election results

09 May 2026

David Thomson, Food and Drink Federation Scotland’s Chief Executive Officer, said:

“Congratulations to John Swinney MSP and his party for their election win. We look forward to working in active partnership with the new government to address the challenges facing Scotland’s food and drink manufacturers and to support a sector that plays a vital role in our economy and food security.

"As we set out clearly in our recent letter to the next First Minister, food and drink manufacturing sits at the heart of the weekly shop, supports tens of thousands of jobs across Scotland and is one of the country’s most energy‑intensive and globally connected sectors. Businesses are facing sustained cost pressures, and government decisions must not add further regulatory or charging burdens that risk pushing costs even higher for businesses and shoppers.

"A crucial first step will be early and sustained engagement with industry, so that Ministers fully understand the inflationary impact of policy decisions before they are taken. At the same time, the food and drink sector must be prioritised by government and enterprise agencies, with a sharper focus on driving growth, productivity and investment across the supply chain.

"Manufacturers also need confidence that environmental and climate policies will be aligned across government, practical to deliver and supportive of businesses as they work towards net zero. A clear, long‑term plan is essential to give companies the certainty they need to invest.

"We stand ready to work constructively with the new Scottish Government on these priorities, to support growth, resilience and food security, and to deliver for consumers and communities across Scotland.”
