Proper Cornish
Topics
Over 35 years ago Proper Cornish started hand-crafting exceptional authentic Cornish pasties using quality local ingredients. Based in Bodmin, Cornwall they hand-crimp as many as 66,000 pasties a day and have extended the range to include new flavours as well as a range of sausage rolls, slices and turnovers.
To help with its extensive growth plans, Proper Cornish invested in the installation of a robotic packing system within their packing department which has helped revolutionize their business.
The company was keen to retain and protect the hand-made element of their process, whilst looking for ways to increase capacity. The robotic system is capable of packing 18,500 units per hour and has resulted in the redeployment of 9 of their colleagues to other areas of the business, which is vital in the current challenging labour availability market.
Employees were initially afraid and intimidated by the robot and technology. However, from the outset, they fully involved the packing department colleagues to ensure they were on board with the project and most importantly, they understood why the change needed to occur. Post full training and the running of the line, they are now used to the process and are happy with the support it provides them.
Feedback from visitors to the production facility is always very positive too, they love the way they have managed to retain the hand-made element of the process and authenticity of the pasty, whilst successfully incorporating new technology.
