In 2023 Premier Foods developed and launched into market 29 new products by recipe which were classified as either a source of fibre, high in fibre or which delivered a source of fibre per portion. Collectively, these products contributed 44.3 tonnes of fibre to the UK diet within the 2023 calendar year.

One example of such fibre innovation is Premier Food’s development of a non-HFSS (high fat, sugar and salt) Mr Kipling Cherry Bakewell, an extension to the Mr Kipling Deliciously Good range of non-HFSS cakes and pies that were first brought to market in April 2022.

Delivering 6.3g fibre per 100g (vs the 1.4g of fibre per 100g delivered by the original Cherry Bakewell), the new Deliciously Good variant classifies as high in fibre and since its introduction has contributed 5.7tonnes of fibre into the UK diet. Collectively the Deliciously Good range contributed 93.8 tonnes of fibre into the UK diet in 2023 alone.

The high fibre content of the Deliciously Good Cherry Bakewell has derived from a change in recipe and the use of alternative, functional ingredients to bring down the sugar content by 30%, necessary to secure non-HFSS classification. The biggest challenge this presented but which Premier Foods successfully overcame, was in maintaining the sensory characteristics including the look, smell and taste of a classic Mr Kipling Cherry Bakewell that consumers love so much.
