European private sector organisations have joined forces to support a fully sustainable palm oil supply chain in Europe by 2020.

The new Commitment to Support 100% Sustainable Palm Oil in Europe was launched at the EU and Global Value Chains' conference on Monday, 7 December 2015 and presented to the Dutch Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation Lilianne Ploumen.

The Commitment is an initiative of the European Sustainable Palm Oil (ESPO) project which has been convened by the Sustainable Trade Initiative (IDH) and the Netherlands Oils and Fats Industry (MVO). The initiative aims to stimulate uptake of more sustainable palm oil in Europe by working in close collaboration with national palm oil initiatives.

Barbara Gallani, FDF's Policy and Sustainability Director, commented:
“We are delighted to support the Commitment to 100% Sustainable Palm Oil in Europe. FDF members continue to demonstrate their commitment to sourcing certified sustainable palm oil and huge progress has been achieved by UK food and drink producers since the UK national ambition launched in 2012. No individual player can succeed in tackling sustainability challenges on their own so initiatives such as the new European Commitment are crucial to driving systemic change across whole supply chains.”

The Commitment is signed and supported by the following organisations:

  • The Food and Drink Federation (FDF)
  • Belgian Alliance Sustainable Palm Oil
  • Caobisco, the Association of Chocolate, Biscuit and Confectionery Industries of Europe
  • Danish Food and Drink Federation Initiative
  • Dutch Alliance Sustainable Palm Oil
  • German Forum Sustainable Palm Oil
  • FEDIOL, European Vegetable Oil and Proteinmeal Industry Federation
  • French Alliance Sustainable Palm Oil
  • IMACE, European Margarine Association
  • Italian Union for Sustainable Palm Oil
  • Swedish Initiative for Sustainable Palm Oil

Notes for editors:

  1. The Food and Drink Federation (FDF) is the voice of the food and drink manufacturing industry – the UK's largest manufacturing sector.
