Ice Cream (IC)
The Ice Cream Association represents the specific interests of the ice cream manufacturing industry. The association deals with issues relating to ice cream including developments in relevant UK and EU legislation and guidance and their potential impact on the UK ice cream sector and acts accordingly to safeguard industry interests. The association also receives inputs from relevant FDF committees and from Euroglaces, the European ice cream association.

Committee Purpose
The purpose of the committee is to:
- Monitor and disseminate developments and their potential impact on the UK ice cream sector through circulars and regular meetings.
- Provide members with the facility to input to the work which FDF does to represent their interests through links with the FSA, Defra and other public bodies.
- Be an active member of Euroglaces, the European ice cream industry association.

BEIS webinar invitation: 28th Jan at 1pm – Industrial Energy Transformation Fund
This invitation from BEIS is for the food and drink sector to promote the recent launch of the Spring 2022 Industrial Energy Transformation Fund competition. The focus will be on the support available for Carbon Capture and Utilisation (CCU) technologies in the food and drink sector, as well as a discussion of the relevant regulatory frameworks.
The event will include an opportunity to:
- Hear about the scope of the IETF in more detail
- Listen to case studies for the food and drink sector
- Understand the regulatory environment for CCU and food grade CO2
- Join the discussion with other industrial sites, technology providers and representatives from relevant trade associations

BSI PAS 224:2020: 100% Plant-Based Foods -Characteristics and Composition - Code of Practice
In December 2020, the British Standards Institution (BSI) published its Publicly Available Specification: PAS 224:2020 on 100% plant-based foods - Characteristics and composition - Code of practice. The FDF contributed to the development of this PAS as a member of its steering group and has provided a summary (see IC-003-21). A formal copy of PAS 224:2020 is available for purchase from BSI’s online shop.
Update on Organics Following EU-UK Trade & Cooperation Agreement
The EU-UK Trade & Cooperation Agreement was announced on 24 December 2020 and applies to every part of the UK from 1 January 2021. The FDF Brexit Team have put together a summary of the Agreement, which is available at IC-001-21-A1. The Agreement, which was published on 26 December 2020, is based on zero tariffs and zero quotas. Annex IV on organic products within the EU-UK Agreement will provide for an equivalence agreement between the UK and EU. The EU has now agreed to recognise the UK as equivalent for organics until 31 December 2023. This is in addition to the already agreed equivalence recognition for UK control bodies, and the UK recognition of the EU as equivalent (IC-001-21).
HFSS Promotional Restrictions – Government Response and Enforcement Consultation
DHSC has published the consultation outcome for restricting promotions of food and drink high in fat, sugar and salt (HFSS) following the 2019 consultation. The document reaffirms the Governments’ intention to bring forward the proposed restrictions on promotion of HFSS products, and sets its’ intention to lay legislation by mid-2021 and for this to come into force in April 2022. DHSC has opened another consultation, which closes on 22 February 2021. FDF is drafting a response to this consultation (IC-002-21).
